Smartphone use is a part of daily life in Georgia and across the nation. It has become something that is necessary for people to work, keep track of family members and much more. However, as with any relatively new aspect of life, it can become problematic and dangerous. Distracted driving is a risk for everyone and a new study indicates that phone addiction is a legitimate issue that is placing people at risk. After car accidents, it is highly possible that the cause was distraction. Understanding research and having a full investigation can be critical to filing a lawsuit to be compensated.
Zendrive specializes in assessing driver behavior. Its latest research says that drivers are becoming increasingly distracted by their smartphones to a troubling degree. It analyzed 2 million drivers as they traveled 4.5 billion miles. This took place over three months from late 2018 into early 2019. It discovered that despite drivers being cognizant of the risks, they are still using their devices behind the wheel. In the past year alone, there has been a 10 percent rise in distraction.
A survey with 500 participants found that 85 percent of drivers say they believe distracted driving is an issue. 47 percent say they are using their devices at least 10 percent of the time they are behind the wheel. 90 percent stated they were safe drivers. People who are classified as “heavy” users were on the device three times more often. 28 percent of the time, they are ignoring the road. These people spend around twice the amount of time on the road than the average member of the population.
The study indicates that these drivers pose a greater risk than drivers who are under the influence. Distractions range from texting, using navigation apps, talking and changing music. Based on this study, people are unaware of the dangers they create for themselves and others. Car accidents are at or near the top of the causes of injuries and fatalities annually.
People who have been hurt or lost a loved one might not know where to turn after a crash. They will be confronted with medical expenses, lost wages and more. A law firm that has experience in investigating and moving forward with a legal filing can be invaluable after car accidents.
